Main Page | See live article | Alphabetical index Six ships of the United States Navy (and one of the Confederate Navy) have been named Memphis in honor of Memphis, Tennessee (which was in turn named for Memphis, Egypt). USS Memphis, a wooden five-gun crew steamer, was chartered by the Navy for the Paraguay Expedition against Carlos Antonio Lopez. USS Memphis was a civilian steamship used in turn by both sides of the American Civil War, ultimately becoming the civilian steamer Mississippi. USS Memphis (ACR-10), known for most of her career as USS Tennessee (ACR-10), was destroyed by a tsunami three months after she was renamed in 1916. USS Memphis (CL-13), an Omaha-class light cruiser, saw action in World War II. USNS Memphis (T-AO-162), a Cumberland-class fleet oiler, served during the Cold War.
