The contract to build her was awarded on 15 February 2000 to Northrop Grumman Ship Systems of Pascagoula, Mississippi, and her keel was laid down on 25 February 2003. She is scheduled to be launched in the summer of 2004, receive the first increment of her precommissioning crew in the autumn of 2004, and be commissioned in the autumn of 2006.
