The contract to build her was awarded on 17 December 1996 to Northrop Grumman Ship Systems of New Orleans, Louisiana and her keel was laid down on 9 December 2000. She was launched on 12 July 2003 and christened on 19 July. She is scheduled to receive the first increment of her precommissioning crew in October 2003, and be commissioned in November 2004.
