Waterford is, historically, the capital of County Waterford in Ireland, though today the City of Waterford is administered separately from the county, which has its seat in Dungarvan.

Founded by the Vikings in the mid-800s, Waterford was Ireland's first true city. Today, with a population of 44,564 (census 2002), Waterford is the fifth largest city in the Republic of Ireland.

Its most famous product is Waterford Crystal which originated here when a glassmaking factory was opened in the city in 1783.
