Yiff

Yiff is a term popularised by the Furry multiuser Internet gaming MU* community (in particular, FurryMUCK), originally intended as a transcription of a sound attributed to the mating of foxes (and, in turn, those who play anthropomorphic fox characters). However, while the original meaning still remains, the term quickly developed into a synonym for sex, sexy, aroused etc., based on the general (though not always entirely serious) attribution of the latter characteristic to (anthropomorphic) foxes, and is most widely-used and -known in this meaning nowadays. (e.g., "a yiffy fur", meaning a furry who is sexually aroused and/or active, "yiffy artwork", meaning sexually explicit artwork, "to yiff", meaning to have sex etc.)

However, there is also an (albeit comparatively small) movement of those who are horrified by the above association to define the popular usage of arguably Furry fandom's most successful example of jargon into something more generally acceptable, their agenda being to advertise furry fandom as being all about nice clean fun amongst a friendly and tolerant community; most furries, though, feel that doing so takes away an important part of what it means to be furry, arguing that even though furry fandom encompasses much more than just sex, the sexual side of furryness cannot and should not be denied, either.

Most furries generally tend to ignore these controversies, but occasionally, the matter surfaces again; for example, at the 1997's Albany Anthrocon convention, three different groups (the "sexy", "fun", and "I'm-tired-of-the-whiners" factions) all took to writing "I'M YIFFY!" on their name-badges; the confusion and ill-karma this generated in the extremists was of great amusement to the convention attendees.
