Affliction is a 1997 film which tells the story of an alcoholic small town policeman who must investigate a mysterious death involving his best friend, while dealing with his own father's alcoholism. It stars Nick Nolte, Sissy Spacek, James Coburn, Willem Dafoe, Mary Beth Hurt and Jim True.

The movie was adapted by Paul Shrader from the novel by Russell Banks. It was directed by Shrader.

It won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor (James Coburn) and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor (Nick Nolte).
