Apia, estimated population 35,000 (1983, is the capital of Samoa. The city is located on the northern coast of Upolu Island. Apia is the nation's only port and city. Bananas, copra, and cocoa are the city's major exports, and cotton goods, motor vehicles, meats, and sugar are the major imports.

Mulinu'u, the old ceremonial capital, lies at the island's western end. Writer Robert Louis Stevenson is buried on a hill overlooking the city.
