Bar is the major sea-port of Serbia and Montenegro on the Adriatic Sea. In 1991 the town itself had some 10,971 residents and with 37,321 in the Bar county.

It is located in the Republic of Montenegro. Historically it has been under Roman, Byzantine, Turkish, Venetian, Austrian and of course Serbian rule. It was first incorporated in Montenegro by the delimitation of the Treaty of Berlin in 1878.

The town's surroundings also incorporate major tourist facilities.
