Barrington is a town located in Bristol County, Rhode Island. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 16,819.

United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 39.9 km² (15.4 mi²). 21.8 km² (8.4 mi²) of it is land and 18.2 km² (7.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 45.46% water.


\nAs of the
census of 2000, there are 16,819 people, 6,011 households, and 4,712 families residing in the town. The population density is 771.2/km² (1,998.1/mi²). There are 6,199 housing units at an average density of 284.3 persons/km² (736.4 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.37% White, 0.68% African American, 0.11% Native American, 1.77% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 0.81% from two or more races. 1.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 6,011 households out of which 40.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.7% are married couples living together, 7.6% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 21.6% are non-families. 18.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.73 and the average family size is 3.14. In the town the population is spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 95.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.0 males.
