Cho Chang is a fictional character in J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series of children's books. She is a year above Harry, in the Ravenclaw house, and is very pretty and popular. Her name has made some readers make varied assumptions about her ethnicity.
Cho is the Seeker for the Ravenclaw Quidditch team. She also dated Cedric Diggory until Cedric's death during the events of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Harry Potter had a crush on Cho, (visibly) starting in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and (seemingly) terminating during the events of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. In his fourth year, Harry asks Cho to go with him to the Yule Ball, but she declines as she had already accepted Cedric's invitation. During Harry's fifth year, Cho, and Marietta Edgecombe, one of her friends, joined Dumbledore's Army, even though both their parents said to stay on Dolores Umbridge's good side. Cho joined because Harry was teaching and because of what happened to Cedric. Harry and Cho went on a date of sorts in the Wizard's village of Hogsmeade, but Cho's continued grief over the death of Diggory, her jealousy of Harry's friendship with Hermione Granger, and his seeming inexperience in matters of the heart soured the experience. Later, Marietta Edgecombe turned traitor, and betrayed the DA, however Hermione had jinxed the parchment each of them signed, ao that Marietta had the word "sneak" written on her forehead. This pracitcally terminated Harry and Cho's relationship as Harry blamed Marietta and Cho thought it was a dirty trick for Hermione to jinx the parchment. After the death of Sirius Black, Harry comments that his feelings for Cho have abated, perhaps because of his changed worldview. At the end of the fifth book, Ginny Weasley reveals that Cho is dating Ginny's ex-boyfriend, Michael Corner.
Cho chang is a letter in the Thai alphabet. cho is the sound of the letter, and chang is the Thai word for "elephant". The name of J. K. Rowling's character may derive from this.References
