In film and television production, the role of executive producer is difficult to define clearly. Executive producers vary in involvement, responsibility, and power from simply being famous names placed on a project to help gain approval through hands-on control of every aspect of production. In television, the latter type is also called the show runner, frequently the initiator of the project and often a writer.
