It is named after the Juniata River, one of the principal tributaries of the Susquehanna River. Juniata College was founded by the Church of the Brethren in 1876. Its current enrollment is approximately 1300 students. Key campus facilities include the Baker Peace Chapel, located near campus, and the Raystown Field Station, an environmental research center located on Lake Raystown.
