A war council of ancient Mongol chiefs (also spelt as kuriltai in English).

Various Turkic peoples use it as a synonym for council, assembly, convention, gathering.

Usually the word is used in political or administrative sense, e.g., as a kind of Parliament or Congress, but not necessarily.

Examples are "World Kurultai of Bashkirs", "Fourth kurultai of Crimean Tatars", "National Kurultai of Kyrgyzstan"
