Legio XII Fulminata, also known as Paterna or Antiqua, was originally levied by Julius Caesar in 58 BC and accompanied him during the Gallic wars until 49 BC. They were stationed in Pharsalus in 48 BC and probably fought in the Battle of Pharsalus. After disbandment, the Legio XII Fulminata was reconstituted in 43 BC and served with Marcus Antonius. During the latest part of Augustus' principality, they served in Syria. The legion's emblem was a thunderbolt (fulmen).
