Littleton is a city located in Arapahoe County, Colorado, in the Denver Metropolitan Area. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 40,340. It is the county seat of Arapahoe County6.

The city of Littleton became widely known in 1999 when the Columbine High School massacre occurred at Columbine High School.

\nLittleton is located at 39°35'59" North, 105°0'39" West (39.599691, -105.010929)1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 36.1 km² (13.9 mi²). 35.0 km² (13.5 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.95% water.

census of 2000, there are 40,340 people, 17,313 households, and 10,387 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,152.0/km² (2,984.8/mi²). There are 18,084 housing units at an average density of 516.4/km² (1,338.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 91.77% White, 1.16% African American, 0.73% Native American, 1.66% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 2.67% from other races, and 1.95% from two or more races. 8.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 17,313 households out of which 28.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.3% are married couples living together, 9.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.0% are non-families. 33.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.96. In the city the population is spread out with 23.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.1% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who are 65 years of age or older.
