Lorena Gallo Bobbitt cut off the penis of her husband, John Wayne Bobbitt, with a kitchen knife, as he lay sleeping, on June 23, 1993, drove off with it and flung it out her car window. Law enforcement officials performed a diligent search and relocated the amputated penis, which was then surgically reattached.

In statements to police, she explained that she cut off her husband's penis because he was "selfish" and "wouldn't give her an orgasm".

In 1994, found to be not guilty of "malicious wounding" when she cut off her husband's penis; because she had experienced an irresistible impulse to do so, and was thus not liable for her actions. She was ordered to spend 45 days in a mental hospital.

Her husband, John Wayne Bobbitt, was acquitted on a charge of marital sexual assault in September 1993.

A post-reattachment John Wayne Bobbitt appeared in such pornographic movies as "Frankenpenis" and "John Wayne Bobbitt ... Uncut."

Lorena Gallo obtained a divorce in 1995 and resumed the use of her maiden name.

In 1998, Lorena Gallo was charged with assault for punching her mother, Elvia Gallo, as she watched television.
