\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,528 km² (590 mi²). 1,526 km² (589 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.13% water.

There are 13,289 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (23/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.88% White, 3.46% Black or African American, 0.14% Native American, 2.02% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 1.00% from two or more races. 1.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 12,360 households out of which 24.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.10% are married couples living together, 7.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.60% are non-families. 31.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.87. In the county the population is spread out with 17.70% under the age of 18, 27.60% from 18 to 24, 21.50% from 25 to 44, 19.10% from 45 to 64, and 14.10% who are 65 years of age or older.
