Olivia de Havilland (born July 1, 1916) was born in Tokyo, Japan to British parents,Walter Augustus de Havilland and his wife née Lilian Augusta Ruse. Olivia de Havilland's younger sister is Academy-award winning actress, Joan Fontaine (born 1917) from whom she is famously estranged.
Olivia and Joan were nominated simultaneously for an Oscar: Joan won. Olivia later won two Best Actress Oscars for To Each His Own (1946) and The Heiress (1949). Olivia was also famous for playing twins in The Dark Mirror.
Olivia de Havilland was the first contract actress to successfully sue a major studio, Warner Bros, because she was unsatisfied with the quality of the scripts she was given. This decision limited the terms of studio-player contracts, including suspension, to a maximum of seven years.
She has been married to Marcus Aurelius Goodrich, and to Pierre Paul Galante, editor of Paris Match.
As of 2003, Olivia de Havilland is in retirement at the age of 86 years old in Paris, France, in good health and living with her daughter, Giselle Galante. She speaks English and French. She visited the United States to promote the 60th anniversary of Gone With the Wind and break ground for a college in her cousin Geoffrey de Havilland's name. She is reportedly writing her autobiography, which will likely recount her much-discussed relationship with Errol Flynn.
