In December, 2003, the New York Times reported on Operation Bramble Bush, an Israeli plan to kill Iraqi strongman Saddam Hussein in 1992.

When a close relative of the dictator was discovered to be terminally ill, the Israelis investigated the possibility using a commando team to ambush the funeral party.

In a rehearsal, the commandos fired live rounds into a convoy simulating the target, killing five soldiers. The plan was never executed.
