When struck, it makes a sustained, shimmering sound rather than the short, sharp sound of a crash cymbal. The size of the cymbal varies between roughly 18" and 22" in diameter, with a larger cymbal having a drier, shorter sound. In rock or jazz, the ride cymbal is often struck regularly as part of the standard accompaniment pattern to the song.
