St. Joseph is a city located in Buchanan County, Missouri. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 73,990.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 115.3 km² (44.5 mi²). 113.5 km² (43.8 mi²) of it is land and 1.7 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.48% water.


As of the census of 2000, there are 73,990 people, 29,026 households, and 18,460 families residing in the city. The population density is 651.6/km² (1,687.7/mi²). There are 31,752 housing units at an average density of 279.6 persons/km² (724.2 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 91.88% White, 5.03% African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.69% from other races, and 1.44% from two or more races. 2.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 29,026 households out of which 30.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.7% are married couples living together, 12.8% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 36.4% are non-families. 30.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.98.
