The Saskatchewan New Democratic Party (NDP) holds an important place in Canadian Politics. It, the direct sucessor to the Saskatchewan Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), has been in government for 43 of the last 60 years.

The Saskatchewan CCF was first elected to government in 1944 under the leadership of Tommy Douglas. As premier, Douglas formed North America's first socialist government, introducing innovative social reforms such as hospital insurance, the beginning of Canada's medicare program.

The Saskatchewan NDP has always been seen as a more moderate and plausible view of the party then some provincial NDP branches are. There is much respect within the NDP itself for the Saskatchewan NDP.

The party has established itself as "the" establishemnt party in Saskatchewan.
