Snorkeling
Snorkeling refers to swimming at the surface with face submerged while breathing through a thin tube or snorkel, as well as to diving to shallow depths -say, up to 20 meters/60 feet- from a snorkeling position while holding one's breath.Free Diving
Free diving refers to a range of styles whereby well-trained snorkelers and divers try to attain a maximum depth in a single dive using only the air in their lungs from a single breath. Depths of more than 100 meters/300 feet have been attained.Scuba Diving
Scuba-diving refers to longer continuous dives -say, up to an hour- to fairly great depths -say, up to 50 meters/150 feet- using SCUBA or Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus equipment. In this case, tanks containing compressed *air*. Scuba divers are mostly recreational divers.Tech Diving
Finally, technical divers also use scuba apparatus, but in this case the tanks are filled with gas mixtures other than air. NITROX (nitrogen & oxygen) and TRIMIX (nitrogen, oxygen and helium) are commonly used. Tech divers make really deep dives and use gas mixtures for safety or longer bottom-time.
