This article is about the American rock band from the 1960s; for information on the Madchester rock band, see their American name, Charlatans UK.

The American Charlatans were in an influential psychedelic rock band that played a pivotal role in the development of the San Francisco scene in the 1960s. More similar to earlier jug band and blues influences than the later heavy psychedelia from the same scene, The Charlatans set the stage with their rebellious attitude and appearance. Their recorded output was small, and their first nationally distributed album (The Charlatans) wasn't released until 1969 (see 1969 in music), long after the band's heyday.

The British Charlatans were a band formed in Birmingham 1989 and after a gig in Cheshire Tim Burgess approached the band to be frontman/singer and was accepted, after many U.K. hit records from the Baggy Indie Scene to Brit Pop and Modern Rock, the Charlatans have established themselve's as one of the U.K.`s most respected and consistantly professional bands ever. Tim Burgess is now following a solo carrer and lives in the West Coast of America.
