In many contexts, tuner can also refer to the actual component doing the same task. In hi-fi terminology, a receiver is an amplifier integrated with a tuner, and these two functions need not be built together. Audiophiles and FM DXers prefer tuners over receiverss for the increased sound quality and versatility that comes with being built as a separate product.
