Westville is the remnents of a coal mining boom town from the first half of the twentieth century. With the closure of the last mine in the mid ninties Westville has seen a marked decline in households and per capita income. Its main claim to fame being Canada Day celebrations when an estimated 40 000 people line its streets for the grand parade. Until recently the town had shared policing and water services with nearby New Glasgow. After some negative remarks by Westville town counselors New Glasgow canceled the policing aspect of the deal. The Westville police department is currently lead by Chief Don Hussar(SP).
