History

The area that became Youngstown was part of the Western Reserve of Connecticut, and most early European-American settlers came from that state.

Youngstown was named for John Young who puchased the entire township from the United States Federal Government via the Western Land Reserve Company, and settled here in 1797. Within a year "Youngstown" was settled by 10 families around where the Mills Creek meets the Mahoning.

Iron ore was discovered in the area soon after, as well as coal. The first blast furnace was built to the east of town in 1803.

Youngstown was incorporated as a town in 1802.

Youngstown was on the Pennsylvania-Ohio Canal, completed in 1839. The railroad came to Youngstown in 1853.

Youngstown was reincorporated as a city in 1867, and the county seat was moved here from Canfield in 1876.
