It is known for its unconventional design without a turret and the fact that aiming the main gun is done by moving the entire tank. After 1967 the 103's were placed in armoured brigades. In 1986 a modified version of the tank was introduced as the 103C. At the beginning of the 1990s the tank was replaced by the Leopard.
